Somerville Kicks-off Strategy to Re-imagine the Town Center.

The Town of Somerville prides itself in its unique historic character and  charm but continues to face challenges in attracting new residents, improving tax revenues, and maintaining a vibrant retail and commercial atmosphere in The Square. To help address some of the challenges, Somerville has partnered with the University of Memphis Design Collaborative (UMDC) to engage town stakeholders in developing a revitalization strategy that will honor Somerville’s past while helping guide it toward its future.

Somerville residents and stakeholders are invited to join this conversation at a kick-off Public Workshop scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, 2019. The Workshop to re-imagine the town center will be held from 6PM to 7PM in the Chickasaw Electric Community Room at the UT Martin Somerville Center.

“Over the past four decades, Somerville has commissioned studies on development issues, updated our zoning ordinance, and secured state grants to improve access to The Square from the south side of Highway 64,” said Mayor Ronnie Neill. “I believe focusing efforts on revitalizing our square and the town center will really set Somerville on a good path and I hope our community will mobilize around this effort, so we can develop a truly collective vision for our future.”

Set to take place before the regular monthly Somerville Planning Commission meeting, the Public Workshop will kick-off a series of public meetings, planning events, community stakeholder interviews, and focus groups that will occur over the coming months. The Public Workshop is designed to gather feedback on preliminary analyses of existing conditions and best practices. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in activity stations designed to gather input and generate ideas around a variety of topics such as:

  • Improved mobility, better connections; getting around on foot;
  • Identifying areas, sites, and buildings for targeted revitalization efforts; or
  • Activation of The Square and Town Center – Expanded events and programming.

“The historic significance of Somerville’s Town Center makes it a special place,” says Andy Kitsinger, Director of the University of Memphis Design Collaborative (UMDC).  “Our team is excited to work in a place that recognizes the value of their historic Town Center and prioritizes planning strategies to strengthen it, which will result in strengthening the entire town of Somerville.”

All Somerville residents and stakeholders are encouraged to lend their voice to help shape a vision for the Town Center. Please join us on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 6PM for a Public Workshop in the Chickasaw Electric Community Room at the UT Martin Somerville Center.
